According to Jewish law, a boy is deemed “bar mitzvah” at 13 years old; a Jewish girl becomes “bat mitzvah” when she turns 12. It is an auspicious and celebratory time, as they become full-fledged Jewish adults ready to grow spiritually and accept the obligation to become a better person. There’s a festive meal and congratulatory encouragement by all. My responsibility as a photographer is to convey those emotions in the images captured. —KB
